Smith-Haut-Lafitte 1998

A beautiful wine of symmetry, finesse, and elegance, this deep ruby/purple-colored offering reveals classic aromas of black currants, new wood, and scorched earth.

Troplong-Mondot 1995

Totally shut down and enclosed, with an impressively saturated purple/black color and a promising but tightly strung nose of mineral, vanilla, espresso,...

Trotanoy 1996

Dark ruby with surprising pink at the rim, the 1996 Trotanoy seems very tightly knit, with dusty tannins, hints of sweet and sour cherry fruit, finishing to a somewhat liquid minerality and spicy note.

Vieux Chateau Certan 1994

The 1994 is performing well, with no harsh tannin or vegetal characteristics.

Angelus 1995

A superb effort in this vintage, Angelus's opaque purple-colored 1995 is a massive, powerful, rich offering with plenty of ripe, sweet tannin.

Ausone 1994

Mediumto deep ruby-colored, with a noticeably vanilla, stony minerality, this austere, medium-bodied wine possesses good ripeness and depth of fruit, but it still comes across as undersized and unimpressive.

Beausejour Becot 1995

On numerous occasions this wine was gorgeous from cask, exhibiting a saturated dark purple color, and a sweet kirsch, black cherry, mineral, and truffle-like character not dissimilar from the old vine intensity found in the great Pomerol, Lafleur.

Beychevelle 1995

This wine performed better from cask. Out of bottle, it displays a medium ruby color, and a distinctive nose of underbrush, damp earth, and loamy-tinged black currant fruit.

Calon Segur 1990

1990: An amber/orange edge to the color suggests full maturity, and the aromas and flavors confirm it.

Calon Segur 1995

As I have said many times since I first tasted this wine, the 1995 Calon-Segur is one of the great sleepers of the vintage (I bought the wine as a future for a mere $250 a case).

Canon la Gaffeliere 1995

A massive wine, with a cigar box, chocolatey, thick, black currant and cherry-scented nose, this full-bodied wine is crammed with layers of fruit, extract, glycerin, and alcohol.

Carruades de Lafite 1995

I have noticed in my tastings that the second wine of Lafite-Rothschild, Carruades de Lafite, has improved over recent years.

Certan de May 1996

This wine reveals an intensely aromatic cedary, dried herb, and black cherry-scented nose, but its abrasive tannin level is troublesome.

Chasse-Spleen 1996

I tasted this wine on three separate occasions, and although it possesses impressive structure and enough depth of fruit, it is disjointed and exhibits an astringent finish - largely because of the high tannin level.

Chateau de Malle 1997 (Half bottle 37.5mls)

An exotic, flamboyant bouquet of orange marmalade, honeyed citrus, caramel, coconut, and pain grille soars from the glass of this well-bodied, potentially outstanding effort.

Chateau Margaux 1983

As I have noted consistently, this can be a breathtaking wine, but having tasted it close to a dozen times since the last edition of this book, over half the bottles were marred by tainted corks.

Chateau Margaux 1990

I had this wine both in Seoul, Korea in February, and from my cellar in December, 2008, and it was remarkable how identical the wines smelled and tasted.
